From Split we caught the car ferry to Hvar Island ( about 1 hour) on smooth crystal clear blue seas, and after disembarking drove the 25kms into Hvar town. Lonely Planet said
this was the jet set place of Croatia and whilst it certainly had its fair share of luxury yachts lined up at the wharf, we thought Trogir had more visual display of wealth around. We found a campsite at another lovely cove and went for a swim to cool off before spending the late afternoon wandering around the wharf area and cobblestone streets of Hvar. The church there was quite spectacular. We saw a group of drunk American girls making a bit of a nuisance of themselves, and then rode up to a few vantage points to get good photos of the port area and old castle – seems like most of the old castles etc were sacked and destroyed by one or other invader over the centuries – Turks, Greeks, Romans, and more recently the Yugoslav army.
The next day we rode along Hvar Island to the other end ( Sucuraj), enjoying the views on both sides and looking at the old stone houses and stone walls – as its extremely dry here, there seem to be lots of areas where agriculture of some sort has started and just been left – also lots of houses with no rooves or windows etc – maybe they've been deserted since the war but there seem to be an awful lot of them. We also found that the next car ferry to Korcula Island (where we were headed ) was not till Saturday but we could island hop to get there the same day – so we took a 20 minute ferry to Drevnik, rode 30 minutes to Ploce and caught another ferry to Trpanj, and ride to Orebic ( this is the only sandy beach in Croatia so we have to go there). And Korcula is only 2.5kms away over the water – these place names are for our info so sorry if its boring anyone reading the blog!
Tomorrow we will hopefully head to Dubrovnik – we've decided to give Bosnia- Hercegovina a big flick as there doesn't seem too much there of interest and its taken us longer to move through Croatia than originally planned – was there a plan?? oh, yeah of sorts... I remember now..
